Fiji Water
Introduction:
Fiji Water is a brand of bottled water procured, bottled, and shipped from Fiji. According to
marketing materials, the water comes from the artesian aquifer on Viti Levu. Fiji Water is
headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Available in 330 ml, 500 ml, 700 ml,
1 liter (0.22 imp gallon; 0.26 US gallon) and 1.5-liter bottles.
History:
Canadian businessman David Gilmour founded Fiji Water in 1996 under the name Natural
Waters of Viti Ltd. Stewart and Lynda Resnick’s Roll Global (now renamed The Wonderful
Company) acquired Fiji Water from Gilmour for $ 50 million in 2004. Resnicks’ holding

In FIJI:
Fiji Water bottles water from Fiji and ships it overseas. The water comes from Yakara on the
north coast of Viti Levu, Fiji’s largest island. From 2007 to 2008, a dispute with the Fiji
government over export tariffs resulted in proceedings, confiscation of shipments, and the
voluntary closure of Fiji’s water bottlers across the industry. The government
eventually withdrew the proposed tax of 20 cents per liter. In December 2008, Fiji Water fired
40% of its employees due to sluggish sales. In November 2010, Fiji deported Fiji Water’s Foreign
Minister, David Ross, for “interfering with Fiji’s internal affairs,” and resigned from the interim

raised the tax from one-third of Fiji per liter to 15 cents per liter for producers over 15

Environmental Impact:
The Fast Company reported in 2007 that the factory machinery used to extract water from
underground was powered by diesel fuel. 1.75 gallons of water and 2,000 times more energy
than tap water are used to make Fiji water bottles. To reduce carbon dioxide emissions, the
company announced plans to plant natural forests in 2008. However, some of the
company’s websites that tracked its progress were closed by 2011. As of 2019, only 50% of the
natural forest area promised by the company has been planted. Fiji Water’s carbon-negative program will not be achieved until at least 2037. “The long-term impact of global
exports of drinking water is the turmoil of unrecycled plastic that clogs landfills,” wrote Anna
Renzer of Mother Jones. Renzer’s quote refers to the entire water bottling industry, but her
article focuses on Fiji. Fiji Water has access to groundwater sources, but many Fijians rely on
rusty pipes, and only occasionally have a water system that serves as the main source of water.
Despite living on the same island as a major water company, 12% of Fijians still do not have
access to safe drinking water.
