Arm & Hammer is a brand of baking powder-based consumer products sold by Church &
Dwight is a leading American household goods manufacturer. The brand logo features an ancient
symbol of a muscular arm holding a hammer in a red circle with the brand name and slogan.
Originally related to baking soda and baking soda, the company began expanding its brand to
other products in the 1970s with baking soda as a deodorizing

Dr. The Austin Church ran a spice business called the Balkan Spice Mills. According to the
company, the Arm and Hammer logo represents Balkan, the god of fire and metalworking in
Rome. It is often said that the brand name comes from the big Armand Hammer. However, the
Arm & Hammer trademark was used 31 years before Hammer was born. Hammer was
asked many times about the Church & Dwight brand and tried to buy the

A history of innovation
1846 The Start of Something Fresh:
It was the beginning of something bigger than everyone knew, but in 1846 his brother-in-law, Dr. Austin Church, and John Dwight were engaged in the production of baking soda for
commercial distribution. At their first factory, Mr. Dwight’s Kitchen, they proudly hand-wrapped this simple yet versatile product in a paper bag.
1847 Milking a Good Thing:
John Dwight and Company is officially built-in. In 1876, he adopted the cow mark as a
trademark of Dwight’s Saleratus (Salleratus means baking soda in Latin). Lady Mode, an award-winning Jersey cow at the Philadelphia Centennial Expo, was chosen as
the product’s icon because of the popularity of using Saleratus with sour
milk for baking. Over the years, the cow brand and the ARM & HAMMER brand have
been sold at the same time. Both brands were equally popular and had loyal supporters.
1860 You’ve Got Direct Mail:
The first edition of ARM & HAMMER‘s Valuable Recipes Mini Cookbook has arrived in
mailboxes nationwide. They are becoming a popular addition to American kitchens, and
we have published over 137 issues, some of which are our founder’s wives, Dr. Austin Church
and John Dwight. Tradition lasts for almost a century
1867 Our Logo is Born:
Austin Church retires and Church & Co. is formed by his two sons. The ARM & HAMMER logo is
brought over from son James’ business, Vulcan Spice Mills. It symbolizes the myth of Vulcan,
the Roman god of fire, who would strike his mighty hammer on his anvil. Over time, this strong
and powerful icon becomes recognized as a symbol of quality all across the world.
1888 It’s In The Cards:
Our first series of “Beautiful Birds of America” trading cards are created to promote the
importance of preserving the environment. The 2×3 inch cards showcase talented artists such
as Louis Agassiz Fuertes. Due to their incredible popularity, over the next five decades, many
other promotional materials are created around the same theme. And, today, they are
considered prized collectibles.
1896 We Make a Name for Ourselves:
Church & Company and John Dwight & Company are officially merged and Church & Dwight
Co., Inc. is born! It’s a fresh start to a business that goes on to prosper and continues to thrive
today, bringing the versatility and convenience of baking soda to homes all over the world.

2009 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repeat:
Our LEED-Silver facility in York, PA manufactures its first bottle of ARM &
HAMMER laundry
detergent. By 2011, the LEED-Silver plant serves as the top producing location for ARM &
HAMMER™ laundry products and is recognized as the most sustainable building we own. As we
